Interesting things I saw this week - 22
This is the first post that I write using my new Drop ALT keyboard, I didn’t expect to be this hooked to the typing experience of a mechanical keyboard but how much nicer it feels to type on this can’t be ignored, I even placed it on top of my laptop to use it instead of it’s own keyboard (inspired by this video).
Another thing that excites me about this keyboard is that it can be customized though QMK, I can see this becoming a new hobby of mine.
[blog-post] Essential oils… The death of hands on herbalism…
A lengthy post that talks about why essential oils are something that shouldn’t be treated as lightly as it is now, explaining what those are in reality, what their purpose is, the misconseptions people have about it and how damaging can they be.
The author also writes about the consecuences of the mass adoption of essential oils disguised as “herbalism” (what she practices and knows deeply). The trivialization of some areas of human knowledge done by companies to sell stuff is a very real problem, I only knew that it happened in the cuisine, as most cooking techniques developed through history were transmitted only orally, but it makes sense that other areas such as herbalism are being affected by it.
A nice excerpt from the post that I think is worth sharing here:
As a young girl I loved thumbing through my grandmothers and even my mothers cook books. Seeing all of the intricate and whole ingredient recipes, all of the notes. To me it was magic that simple whole things could be arranged in such a way to make this beautiful and delicious meal. That simply moving the flavors and ingredients in one way or another created a whole new experience of nourishment!
Now in my mid 30’s when I pick up a cook book or click on a blog recipe 90% of the time the ingredients listed are “A box of”, “A can of”, “A packet of”. Very rarely are the ingredients whole let alone anything that our grandmothers would recognize.
Now ask yourself how well that shift has treated our bodies? Our cultures? Our lands?
Because this is what essential oils are to herbalism.
The death of knowledge and health go hand in hand and both die under the heal of one thing and one thing alone.
Convenience.
We must not engage in the trivialization of human knowledge in name of convenience, as it will only makes us more dependent on the current system we live in and will slowly erase our own history.
[video] Games, Schools, and Worlds Designed for Violence
A video essay about how the consideration of violence affects the design of videogames and how architechture can reflect that consideration also.
[music] [bandcamp] ASHITAKA(アシタカ) : H I G H W A Y D R E A M S (朝の高速道路) 1 9 8 4

A slow paced vaporwave album, some really nice stuff here.
Listening to this feels like a lonely night in a neon-illuminated city, japanese advertisements everywhere, like it is going to rain in any moment without warning.
I am always amazed by how people can manipulate exixting songs and make them feel like something completely different, delivering experiences that can’t be accessed through any other medium.
The enrichment of music culture through the art of smpling is something that must be protected, I don’t know how anyone can know that there are so many talented people doing interesting stuff with already existing sounds and prefer to protect the interests of some big companies through copyright.
Copyright should not exist, long live vaporwave.
