Interesting things I saw this week - 25
I’ve noted that lately I have developed a view of how life should be lived that can be summarized in 3 points:
- Don’t try to optimize your life for anything.
- Don’t mindlessly accept your life as it comes.
- Don’t limit your interests to only one thing.
Most of the comment I have on things I see through the week fit inside those 3 points as I think everybody could benefit from that perspective. Life is to be experienced as much as you can, but don’t try to experience it all as it is impossible and even if you could those experiences would be so superficial that wouldn’t add any significant value to your life.
[video] What made the Ancient Egyptians Fat and Sick
A video explaining how egyptians ate and how it affected them physically. Also explains a little of the history of the food pyramid and why it is not the best guideline to follow when eating.
This is a video by What I’ve learned so it is backed by papers and not just a superficial wikipedia research.
Also WIL shared in his newsletter a message about two vegan centered youtube channels’ responses to the above video trying to debunk it. It started as a way to debunk those debunking videos but turned into an explanation of viewpoints and why keeping up with a discussion of that matter is extremely tiring for the viewer that only wants to know the truth.
On a personal note, you should not try to optimize your life in function of the diet you follow, being conscious of what you eat and informing yourself about the effect of food in your body is enough, as with the meat only diet and veganism, there is not a single superior diet that works for everyone and always leads to a healthy life.
Food is interesting but making your diet your personality limits your human experience.
[video Homemade Froot Loops + the Ridiculous History of Breakfast Cereal
The history off breakfast cereal is interesting, the degeneration from it’s initial conception to what it is now is baffling, also how it is advertised to us as being a “healthy breakfast” when it is just a ton of sugar and carbs is something to keep in mind. Also the recipe for the home made froot loops is fun to watch.
[video] Music Theory and White Supremacy
A 44 minutes long video about the background of what has been accepted as “Music Theory”. This is worth seeing through even if (like me) you don’t understand music notation, as it is another big example that things like art, music and cooking, things that started as cultural expressions of humans through history, can’t be universally explained as the deep roots they have in human experience make them more worthy of explanation through the lens of cultural context.
